Less than a hundred yards further a sign pointed to the right, indicating its messahe in Chinese only. What Tibetan could want directions? It seemed to be in the right place, there was only one right turn on the map in a hundred or so kilometers and we were in no mood to return to the checkpoint to ask the way. A waning moon in a clear night lit the landscape, with the Milky Way outline llike a katak, a silk blessing scarf. We could see for miles. Smoke from several ba, the momads tents, drifted into the still night air under the stars. An animal bowled.
